Week 25 - 30 May 2021

It’s been nearly a year since I last wrote some notes. Hello lovely reader! I’ve missed you.

I’m writing because I’ve thrown a bunch of balls in the air, and I’m not quite sure where they’ll all land. So think of these notes as a photo of them mid-flight, if that’s not too saccharine for you. Euckh.

The first ball. Last week I wrapped up work at Farewill. It feels rare to have been able to work on such a range of interesting, human problems, and I’m going to miss it all - especially the people. Even though I’ve been there around 2 and a half years, it’s felt like a new job every 3 months. It’s the most rewarding work I've done - in particular some of the not design stuff like hiring and mentoring. Given all that it’s taken a bit of a leap to leave!

I’m leaving not just to get my teeth sunk into a fresh subject - I think one of the pleasures of being a designer is being able to do this - but also to experiment a little with the conditions I work in. I’ve been in-house for the last six years (!!!) and reckon it’s time for a change to that too.

I want to be open to what those conditions are. To not get lost I’ve given myself a rough aim for the next year - work on 10 varied and interesting projects (whilst at least covering my living expenses). To do those projects might mean freelancing, getting a job at an agency, doing a masters, helping friends out, something else entirely… let's see. At the moment I’m leaning towards a masters (this one in particular) with bits on the side. My interview is next week - wish me luck!

Over the past month, whilst doing 2 days a week at Farewill, I’ve started project number 1 on that list of 10. I’ve been working with Kingston Foundation to figure out, in the absence of a physical show, what a end of year celebration of their work looks like. I've been working with students to figure out what it all looks and feels like, which has been a real pleasure. We’ll be launching next week - please pray that my slightly amateur code holds up 🙏

I'd also like to do a bit of walking, with my little coffin tent, over the next few months. I'm eyeing up the South West Coast Path. It skirts Somerset, where I'll hopefully be with some friends in July.

If you have a project that could be 1 of my 10 over the next year, drop me a line! I’d love to chat about it.

Speak soon Victor
